Mercedes Sosa, Argentine Folk Singer, Is Dead at 74
What a voice, what a heart, what a force of nature. From the New York Times obituary, linked above:Â ”I didn’t choose to sing for people,” Sosa said in a recent interview on Argentine television. ”Life chose me to sing.”
This is a great song too: “Cambia, todo cambia” (“Everything changes”) – she dances too!

Think of the lives she changed (like mine!) by singing what she sang, with that incredible voice and spirit.
Wow, I had no idea that Mercedes was famous around the world. She’s such a symbol for the Argentine people. I haven’t listened to much of her work, but I still feel sad about her parting.
In 1993, leg in plaster, I travelled to London on the train with a couple of pals to see Mercedes in concert. By then it was five years after being introduced to her beautiful music in Central America by a Nica friend.
I met wifey the following year and often played her Mercedes’ songs.
I had hoped to see Mercedes in concert again-the concert was amazing, more a visceral experience than anything.
In addition to Gracias a la Vida this one has always been a strong favourite:
